Akio Daidaihise (橙久昭夫, Daidaihise Akio) is the Center of the American basketball team: Devils. Before he moved overseas, he played for Kirisaki Daīchi High and occupied the same basketball position. He is determined to make his own basketball career as an NBA player. The birth of his daughter gave him another reason to fight for his goals. Due to his natural speed and flexibility he is known as the Orange Flash (橙色閃光, Daidaiiro Senkō).
Akio is a fair-skinned young man, who has shoulder-length orange hair and eyes of the same color. His ears and forehead are covered by a few hair strands. He sometimes ties his hair into a knot with a red hair elastic band and the forehead strands with a simple, red hair clip (both borrowed from Sunako) during matches. Later (in the Extra Game series), he wears his hair parted in the middle. He is very tall, measuring 198 cm and standing even taller than the Shooting Guard of the Generation of Miracles. He is the third tallest basketball player of his team, after Grammy and Darryl.
During matches, he wears the black and red Devils jersey with the number 7. As footwear he has a pair of black basketball shoes. When he is training, Akio wears a large, green T-shirt and white baggy or short pants. While taking care of his daughter, Lateesha, the player wears a simple outfit consisting of a black undershirt and grey baggy pants, and occasionally a pink apron (a gift from his teammates). In the winter, Akio can be seen wearing a peach woolen blouse and a light brown jacket with a golden hoodie.
Akio is a two-faced person driven by the desire to achieve his goal. As he said, he is a man of action, he doesn't like to wait, being truly ready to spring into action when he is playing. The power to think and act spontaneously is a major guiding force for him, and more than reasoning, he relies on his intuition for taking decisions. Sometimes, his decisions can have adverse consequences for his team and for the evolution of the game, because he doesn't have a general overview of what will happen next. Daidaihise displays the same arrogance as the Generation of Miracles when he plays and he can often be cruel, even if it is not intended.
Initally to fulfill his goal, he joined one of Tokyo's best eight high school basketball teams: Kirisaki Daīchi High. While playing for this team, Daidaihise adopted the dirty and foul playing style, being mostly influenced by Makoto Hanamiya.
Even Akio seems cold-hearted, he is not. In fact, he is faithful and generous towards others, and he hardly expects anything in return for his generosity and faithfulness.
As Kiyoshi says, Akio has a big-hearted personality, he deeply admires and respects his friends and relatives, and sometimes he tends to be quite emotional and protective towards his teammates and coach. He usually treats them as his family and gives them a helping hand when they have a problem. Akio also knows how to deal with his team's manager Sunako, being able to cheer her up when she's sad. He appreciates her for her devotion to the team and her good cooking skills, and for the fact that she takes care of his daughter, whom he loves the most. Together with his teammates, Daidaihise also tends to annoy their coach, Grammy who kicks them for their infantilism. Thus he often calls the older Mother Hen (母編, Haha-hen) annoying him even more.
Akio can also be very moody, he is temperamental and his mood swings are quite unpredictable, sometimes becoming overwhelming for his teammates and the others around him. Daidaihise also shows great interest in the others playing style during a match, that in the end to come up with brilliant and novel ideas to improve the techniques he just saw and increase their power. However, during this process, he can end up with ideas that may not be too practical, or may be too over-ambitious, having the opposite effect. Thus, he can often become extremely pessimistic, considering himself a failure.
You should never make him angry, if you do that, prepare for war. 'Cuz, he's going to destroy you, slowly and painfully!
Akio doesn't like confrontations, thus he will usually go out of their way to avoid useless arguments; but when he is really enraged, he tends to become imprudent and irrational, which is always reflected in his basketball style. He is also known for his steadfastness on the court, and he is ready to endure and do anything in order to prove that he is the best, even resorting to the Kirisaki Daīchi dirty playing style.
When he was a child, Akio's parents died in a car accident. Because he had no other relatives to take care of him, the boy was taken to an orphanage. Being a fragile child and a newcomer, he was usually bullied by the others because of his eyes and hair color. However, after a few months of bullying, Daidaihise gained self-confidence and outfaced them. At the same time, he discovered that he is a quick-learner and used this advantage in many situations.
He went to the same Junior High as Kiyoshi, and he was eventually invited by Taichi, who saw his athletic skills and potential, to play for the school's basketball club. Participating in a few matches, Akio developed a love for basketball and decided to become a NBA player. When his team faced Teikō Junior High, he didn't feel very well and thus he didn't participate. However, he heard about Shōei's defeat and became somehow depressed. During his last year, he got a scholarship and eventually entered to Kirisaki Daīchi.
During the Interhigh's preliminary finals, Akio, with the number 6, played for the most part of the match, being replaced at the beginning of the fourth quarter. As the match progressed, Daidaihise watched as his team got back on defense and eventually witnessed how Kiyoshi was injured by his teammates. He sighed, disappointed, feeling bad for what happened to his former teammate. Later, he visited Kiyoshi in the hospital and talked with him about the match. Akio also told Kiyoshi, that he had received an invitation from an American manager, who saw his last performance, and that he was going to leave for America to play there. With that, he left the other teen, but not before to tell him that they will keep in touch and wished him to get well soon.
The next days before his depart, he retired from Kirisaki Daīchi's basketball team, but not before being kicked by Hanamiya. Later, after his plane landed, Akio was welcomed by Sunako Tommii, who offered to be his guide in America. At a certain point, he became the legitimate father of a baby girl, who was abandoned by her mother and whom he named Lateesha.
He is some kind of a photocopier, but still, he can duplicate only in black and white. And when that is done, he just adds his own colors.
- Sunako describing in a childish way Akio’s copying and technique upgrading talents.
Akio developed his pressure endurance during his first days as a Devils player, under Grammy’s guidance, who is a veteran when it comes about defense. He learnt the technique in about three weeks. It was hard for him to understand the method and it took that long to learn is because he had to build up his stamina and physical ability. This technique is simply requires a great amount of energy and power from the user to block another player. As Grammy says, the user acts just like a “defense wall” to stop the other players from moving and receiving the ball. He used the technique against Murasakibara and Okamura, but it has worked only on the latter.
While he utilized the pressure endurance on Murasakibara, Daidaihise was overwhelmed by the Yōsen player’s height and lasted a few minutes on the court.
Zone is a state of being that Akio accesses for the first during a one-on-one with Axel, being enraged by the last’s words and wanted to prove him the opposite. He wanted to show the other that he loves basketball sincerely, that he plays and seeks to improve his style in order to achieve his dream. However, he cannot make full use of this state because of his imprudent and irrational personality when he is angry. Thus, he wastes his stamina quickly and in vain, and he can stay in the Zone for a few minutes, as noted by Aomine.
When he opens the gates of the Zone, his power grows substantially and his speed is even greater than before. Due to this, he received the nickname of Orange Flash from Grammy.
Akio and Teppei went to the same Junior High and were both invited by Taichi to play for the school’s basketball club. While studying there, Akio formed a close friendship with the brown-haired player. He even started to see him as a brother-figure in order to compensate the lack of his parents and other kin; when their team was defeated by Teikō Junior High, Akio tried his best to cheer them up, especially Kiyoshi.
After he graduated Junior High, Akio still kept in touch with the other and met up with him on the basketball court. Daidaihise was disappointed when his Senior High teammates injured his former partner and felt bad for what happened to him. To console his ex-teammate, Akio visited Kiyoshi in the hospital and apologized sincerely for what happened. Because Kiyoshi was the only friend he trusted, Akio told the Seirin player about the invitation he received from the American manager. He also promised the brown-haired player that they will keep in touch and wished him to get well soon. As promised, he kept in touch with the other and told him about how the Americans are, about his new team, manager and coach, even about his daughter. Akio also sent a photo with him and his team and a short description of each teammate to Kiyoshi.
Akio and Hanamiya have a difficult relationship; however, they respect each other for their abilities. During his first year as a Kirisaki Daīchi player, Akio liked to fool around with Hanamiya and to study with him at the library. Sometimes his easy-going personality pissed off the last and got kicked for this. Like his other teammates, Daidaihise respected Makoto’s orders, and mostly influenced by the other, he adopted the dirty and foul playing style. Akio founds his captain’s mischievous-looking cute and likes to make fun of him due to this trait.
Akio’s relationship with his former team can be described as strange; he sometimes liked to fool around with his ex-teammates and at times he was disgusted by their attitude and actions. For example, he hated Hara’s dry remarks, but liked to share bubble gum with him. He is kind of scared by Kōjirō’s blank black eyes and finds them disturbing.
Akio met Sunako for the first time at the airport, where she welcomed him and offered to be his guide in the American state. She was also the first to introduce him to the rest of the team and the first who accepted his sexual orientation. Because they share the passion for basketball and wrestling, Akio sees his manager as his older sister and often calls her Big Sister (お姉さん, Onēsan) or sometimes just Ko-chan. More than that, he accepts when she tries to ‘hit break’ his ribs or when she tests new wrestling moves on him, being more concerned about the bruises than the fractures.
Like the rest of his teammates, the orange-haired player appreciates Sunako for her cooking skills and for her devotion to the team. Daidaihise is quite fond of her Ability Scan talent and follows her advice when it is necessary. During matches, he lets Sunako to take care of his daughter, Lateesha. He is also aware of his manager crush on him, but he cannot share the same feelings.
Akio and Deborah Smith met for the first time during the Winter Cup finals, at the Seirin High vs. Rakuzan High match. He saw her management abilities and suggested Grammy and the team to recruit her as their second manager, later when she will graduate from high school. After dating for a few years, Akio and Deborah decided to marry each other; they also became the parents of a boy: Shigeo Daidaihise. The player is happy that Deborah accepted his daughter, Lateesha.
The player sees his new team as the family he never had. Akio is very fond about his new teammates and especially about their dreams. He respects their abilities and dedication and tries to his best to live up their expectations. Daidaihise appreciates their help and support in raising his child, Lateesha, and sometimes he seeks for their help when he cannot. He relies in particular on the help Ezra and Darryl offer him.
Like his teammates, Akio tends to annoy their coach and they often get kicked for their infantilism. Together with Ezra, he likes to make fun of their captain, Alim, whom they somehow respect. They even concoct pranks in order to make him look ridiculous. At a certain point, when Grammy asked where Alim was, they told him bluntly that they threw their captain in the pool, because they wanted to see if the black-skinned player floated.
Because of his unpredictable mood swings, Akio tends to annoy the others around him, but Axel calms him down every time. The orange-haired player is thankful for this to his teammate.
"I've received an invitation from an American manager, you know...She saw my last performance and she was impressed by my potential..She said: <<Young man, you look quite promising. If you join my team, with you're talent and my friend here' trainings, you'll go far.>>. I accepted their offer, because you know very well that my dream is to make a basketball career as a NBA player. I am going to leave next week, after I settle things down with my teammates..by the way, Hanamiya was not too delighted to find out that..poor him, you should have seen his face when he heard that manager, it was precious...Oh, well..It's late. Gotta go now, but don't worry, we'll keep in touch with each other on the phone." (to Kiyoshi while visiting him in the hospital)
"It' not my fault that you act like a Mother Hen, Grammy-san!" (to Grammy Murphy, his coach)
